I was actually feeling a bit unwell recently but the sunny weather today successfully enticed me to head outside especially when it had been raining constantly for the past two weeks. Today I decided to make my way to several art galleries to see some arts of course. The first place I went to is the STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery located at Robertson Quay.

STPI stands for Singapore Tyler Print Institute, a not-for-profit organisation committed to promoting artistic experimentation in the mediums of print and paper. STPI sits alongside National Gallery Singapore and the Singapore Art Museum as part of the national Visual Arts Cluster of leading institutions in the region. I managed to check out the on-going exhibition in its gallery space on 2nd floor.

Then, I travelled to the Tanjong Pagar Distripark. I was here a couple of months ago to visit the Singapore Art Museum which has temporarily located to this area while their main museum building is currently undergoing renovation. This time, I’m here for the several art galleries which are also located in this industrial complex. They are the Gajah Gallery, Linda Gallery and the Whitestone Gallery.

The current exhibition at the Whitestone Gallery fascinated me the most out of all the art galleries I visited today. Called ‘Thousand Nights’, the temporary exhibition features magical-like drawings and images by a young Japanese artist (Karen Shiozawa) who attempts to intertwine memories of the past with current realities and unknown memories. The use of light further elevates her work and opens up a ‘galaxy of imagination’ as she intended. A talented artist indeed.

Next, I made my way to Gillman Barracks, a designated contemporary arts cluster which comprises of international art galleries, restaurants and a research centre. They are all housed in conserved colonial barracks built in 1930s (previously used by British military during their occupation) near Alexandra Road.

I visited six galleries over here; Mizuma Gallery, The Columns Gallery, Ota Fine Arts Gallery, Mucciaccia Gallery, Sundaram Tagore Gallery and Yeo Workshop Gallery. They are all pretty small and hence you can easily visit all of them in one trip. There are few other galleries in this complex too but they have no on-going exhibition currently. The area is quite deserted and sees few visitors even on a weekend despite being marketed as a prime destination for art exhibitions in Singapore.

That’s all for my post today, on the last day of November 2024. Have a good weekend!
